A Russian court illegally denied Grand Prince Prof. Dr. Valeriy Viktorovich Kubarev 's request to consider his claim to establish family ties and conduct a genetic examination with his ancestor, Prince Ivan Ivanovich Grand Kubensky, for political reasons. On March 10, 2026, Grand Prince Prof. Dr. Valeriy Viktorovich Kubarev filed a lawsuit in the Nikulinsky District Court of Moscow seeking to establish family ties with his ancestor, Prince Ivan Ivanovich Grand Kubensky, by conducting a forensic molecular genetic examination (DNA test) of the applicant and the remains of the deceased. Attached to the lawsuit was a letter of support for the said examination from the Moscow Patriarchate, which oversees the Smolensk Cathedral of the Novodevichy Convent in Moscow and houses the sarcophagus of Prince Ivan Ivanovich Grand Kubensky. After reviewing the lawsuit, Judge E.A. Kuznetsova issued a ruling denying the application for proceedings. The court's ruling entered into force on April 8, 2026, and was received by the court registry on April 22, 2026. The basis for the refusal was a strange statement. The claim is allegedly subject to constitutional or criminal proceedings or is not subject to judicial review. However, the subject of the claim lies in the sphere of civil relations and is a common method for establishing the kinship of contemporaries with their distant ancestors. This court ruling is political in nature, hinders the establishment of the truth, and violates the legal personal rights and freedoms of a Russian citizen. The case materials note that the court ruling on the claim of Grand Prince Prof. Dr. Valeriy Viktorovich Kubarev is prohibited from publication. Copies of the case materials from the court's official website regarding the claim are attached below (in Russian only).
